Research Unit

Research and innovation for the environment

Teaching through research aims to promote R&D activities and innovation around products, materials and techniques for sustainable construction.

Conventional R&D approaches are no longer sufficient to meet the challenges and emergencies facing the construction industry. Accelerating innovation and proposing concrete solutions, based on academic knowledge and expertise, are at the heart of the BUILDERS Lab Research Unit's approach.

BUILDERS Ecole d'Ingénieurs has a 'BUILDERS Lab' Research Unit with high-level skills in key areas linked to the National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC) and the RE2020: development of low-carbon constructions and materials, bio-sourced materials, circular economy, building thermics and energy, materials to combat heat islands....

BUILDERS Labs' research activities are focused on building materials, with two main scientific themes.

Axis E1: Low environmental impact materials in their environments

This theme focuses on the behavior of cementitious materials and alternative materials in the marine environment.

The associated laboratories are:

  • Lab D2 - Geotechnics and soil mechanics (GMS)
  • Lab D3 - Chemistry of materials (CDM)
  • Lab D4 - Durability of materials (DDM)

Axis E2: Thermal and energy engineering of buildings and systems

This theme is based on microstructure-physical-mechanical behavior and energy correlations of cementitious materials and composites. In particular, the study of the influence of microstructure (porous, crystalline and chemical and mineralogical composition) on the physical-mechanical, energetic and geotechnical properties of construction materials.

The associated laboratories are:

  • Lab D1: Thermal, energy, analytical and microstructural testing (ETEAM)
  • Lab D5: Forming and prototyping (MFP)

Human resources

The Research Unit is staffed by a manager, a deputy manager, 2 research axis managers, lecturers with HDR degrees, a technical laboratory employee, a R&D engineer, a collaborative project management unit, post-docs and PhD students.
